Technical Authorship

A technical author is a professional writer who researches information, designs, writes, creates, maintains, and updates technical and/or complex documentation—including online help, user guides, white papers, design specifications, company policies and procedures, system manuals, training materials, film scripts, marketing material, exhibition displays, press releases and other documents and materials – specifically aimed at the intended media/readership/buyer/user level.

Technical authorship may be on any subject that requires explanation to a particular audience.  A technical author is not usually a subject matter expert (SME), but possesses and applies expertise to interview SMEs and conduct research necessary to produce accurate, comprehensive documents etc.  Companies, governments, and other institutions typically hire technical authors not for expertise in a particular subject, but for expertise in technical writing, i.e., their ability to gather information, analyze subject and audience, and produce clear documentation.

If your policies and procedures are more than 1 page of A4 (recto/verso) - then you could do with my help.

Have your policies and procedures been written by your own staff?  Have they had training in how to write?

Technical Authorship

  • Are your policies and procedures being used?
  • Can you provide evidence that they are?
  • Is your technical documentation fit for purpose?
  • Is your technical information stored and retrieved in an efficient manner?

Technical Authorship is a unique skill that is becoming an increasing element of our work.  Organisations and companies are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of accurate - fit for purpose documentation that meets the needs of the business.

When challenged - the overwhelming majority of our clients recognise that the information they provide is wholly unsuitable and they have no evidence that any of their documentation is used.  More and more - clients are recognising the advantages of professionally produced documentation.  They understand the need for implementation strategies and the need to monitor and maintain the information in an efficient manner.  The benefits are enormous - Evidence being one!
